XCOR Announces Steam Engine Prize Winner

The winning pump by Mark Schell of Palatine, Illinois is shown here.
Mojave, CA May 11, 2006 – XCOR Aerospace is pleased to announce that Mr. Mark Schell of Palatine, Illinois, has won the Steam Engine Prize contest sponsored by XCOR.

XCOR created the Steam Engine Prize two years ago with the idea of engaging people other than aerospace professionals to explore available alternatives to traditional pump applications. We especially wanted to reach out to the large number of inventive and creative people who inhabit the world of live steam.

This is exactly the attitude we were looking for, said XCOR chief engineer Dan DeLong as he examined Mr. Schell's pump prior to testing it. It is pleasing to see Mark's approach. His engine is well made, and shows that a lot of thought and creativity went into its design.

As hoped, Mr. Schell's design differed from the DARPA sponsored work that XCOR is doing. It was also a unlike the pump design XCOR is currently developing with private investment money.  A photo of the motor is pictured here. Video and more images will be posted in the near future.  The motor assembly weighed less than five kg as per the prize rules for first place.

XCOR engineer Doug Jones awarded the prize check to Mr. Schell.

The closing date for prize submittals was 31 March 31 2006. No other prizes were awarded.
